Tackling Rare Immune Disorders Through Partnership and Innovation

Primary Immunodeficiencies (PIDs) are rare, often life-shortening genetic disorders that debilitate the immune system. But thanks to a unique collaboration between clinicians, immunologists, haematologists, and geneticists at St Vincent’s Hospital Sydney and the Garvan Institute of Medical Research, patients across Australia now have access to world-leading care and research that is focused on solving this issue.

Through the Therapeutic Interventions in Primary Immunodeficiency study, our expert team is transforming the outlook for adults living with PID. The program aims to better understand how current treatments affect the immune system, improve precision medicine approaches, and develop future therapies that improve long-term health outcomes.

As the most specialised referral service in this space, St Vincent’s accepts patients from across the country — with around half referred by other immunologists. Advances in next-generation genetic testing have helped identify over 500 distinct gene disorders, allowing researchers to better diagnose, monitor, and tailor care for individuals.

This partnership is already delivering real-world impact: from using off-the-shelf immune drugs to restore function, to offering bone marrow transplants that rebuild immune systems from the ground up. Together, the team is driving a new era of precision immunology — where rare doesn’t mean overlooked, and a diagnosis leads to hope, not despair.
